By Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO, Coursera

Coursera was founded to provide universal access to world-class education so that anyone, anywhere has the opportunity to change their life through learning. Our mission is deeply rooted in our business. It’s what inspires our team members, attracts our partners, and enables our customers to make high-quality education a reality for millions of students around the world. To that end, I am excited to present our first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

In this report, we are pleased to share progress on several key initiatives:

  • Greater gender and race/ethnicity representation in the workforce through our remote approach, including 48% of global leadership roles now held by women
  • Expanded employee wellness programs, including new mental health resources, corporate rest weeks and a global coworking program focused on local connections
  • We have achieved ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification as part of our commitment to protecting the data of our students, partners and customers
  • We’ve expanded our catalog to promote ESG literacy, including over 200 sustainability courses and over 100 social justice courses

Coursera is a public benefit company that underscores our deep commitment to making a positive impact on society. We were recertified as a B Corp® in 2022, meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency, but our efforts are just beginning.

Our world is changing rapidly. The forces of digital transformation, automation and globalization continue to profoundly reshape labor markets and society as a whole. Challenges such as social inequalities, job displacement and the growing digital divide create an urgent need to prepare students, businesses and governments to keep up with this accelerated pace of change. The new model of education must meet this challenge with unprecedented speed and scale.

Our rapid expansion reflects Coursera’s growing importance as a global destination for students seeking job-relevant skills and qualifications, as well as for institutions looking to upskill their workforce. More than 118 million students have come to Coursera to advance their careers and improve their lives, and more than 1,000 businesses, governments, and academic institutions use our platform to expand access to educational and economic opportunities around the world.

Together with our educational partners, we are creating a more affordable, accessible and relevant higher education system. Our catalog combines enduring skills from universities with hands-on, hands-on learning from leading industry manufacturers. Our entry-level professional certificates create pathways to well-paying digital jobs while providing credit toward college degrees.

We are pleased with our record progress, but our work is not done. Working with the Coursera community, we are focused on fulfilling our mission so that talent and opportunity can arise from anywhere in the world.
